The Presence of the Holy One Became Tangible

To what was I being called? What was the purpose of my life? How might I serve God and others best?

Awakening to Wholeness is a series of prompts, reflections, and teachings about how holding the tension of opposites can help us to heal division and experience wholeness. If you feel moved to share your own reflections, we invite you to email us with the subject line “Wisdom of Opposites” or tag us on social media with #EHoPWisdomOfOpposites.

This is a guest post by EHoP community member Dianne Schlichting, in response to “Holy Ones and Holy One” by Christine Luna Munger.

We welcome contributions from all members of our community! To learn more, see the bottom of this page.

I recall easily a time when I needed a direction in my life. I had left one avenue of vocation, religious life, and felt like I was floundering, not knowing in what direction I should move. I felt abandoned by God, puzzled by the reality of not knowing what to do or what path to follow. I prayed for direction, but felt open space—not a firm response.

Then I visited a dear friend who was studying to obtain an advanced degree in another state. We gathered in a small room with other friends, and I asked them to pray with me for a direction for my life. To what was I being called? What was the purpose of my life? How might I serve God and others best?

We prayed, and the Presence of the Holy One became tangible. The power of Presence enfolded me. I felt empowered to move forward into Not Knowing, but trusting the Way. A most amazing sense of Being with and surrounded by Power and Love encased me.

The result: I could not put the Word of God down. It became living in a way it had not been before. I sensed a call, a direction that was positive and affirming of who I am in the sight of the Holy One. The Spirit of God coursed through me as never before and a level of trust not known before held me.

That experience was a connection in prayer within community that has shaped my life as a wife, mother, grandmother, and person. The blessing of knowing that God loved me in the present moment, each and every moment, was given and received and has made all the difference in how I live life today.
