The Prayer Thread is a collection of teachings and practical prompts to help as we learn to pray in community. This text was originally delivered on November 22, 2024 as a short teaching at our online weekly prayer sit.

The only thing that never changes is the fact of constant change.

Species evolve and species die out. Nations rise and nations fall. Communities see good times and communities live through bad times. People live and then they die. The sun rises and the sun sets. My lungs breathe in and they breathe out.

Something similar could be said of prayer. New forms arise and get put to rest. Words come and words go. The hours of when to pray shift over time. Our understanding of who we pray to develops in stages. Who we pray for changes daily. All the bits and pieces of prayer shift and evolve, but the fact of people (and all of creation!) at prayer does not change. One wonders, has there ever been a time when someone or some creature somewhere has not been at prayer?

The life of prayer is God’s own Love making itself manifest, constantly and for all of eternity.

When we feel weary, knocked down, or desperate, we can lean into prayer as ongoing, on our behalf, the continuous font of transformative Love flowing from the Heart of the Holy one.
