The Prayer Thread is a collection of teachings and practical prompts to help as we learn to pray in community. This text was originally delivered on March 27, 2026 as a short teaching at our online weekly prayer sit.

In the Northern hemisphere, especially in the spring, we are reminded of the sounds of life in movement, waking up from the slumber of winter. Winds blow, and the sound of leaves rustling stirs up the air. Ice melts, and the sound of water gurgling in creeks and groaning in lakes flows through the land. Newborn animals cry out for mama’s milk, which soothes their hungry bellies aching to nourish and grow. Even human babies in utero recognize the sounds of their mother’s voices both before and after birth and respond to its sounds.

This chorus of sacred sounds, reminding us of life at work in creation, becomes the songs of our prayers. We compose hymns praising God at work in creation. We chant sacred phrases helping us to heal and harmonize our flesh and spirit. We participate in the cadence of petition, hoping to co-create a just world. We even honor the sound of silence when we learn to become still and rest in the arms of the All in All.

Just as emotions and thoughts move through our bodies, and energy moves throughout all living things, the sound of life singing moves through our prayers. May we learn to offer our voices, to listen deeply for the voices of others, and to participate prayerfully in the dance of creation, in response to the sound of life singing in and through us!
