The Prayer Thread is a collection of teachings and practical prompts to help as we learn to pray in community. This text was originally delivered on April 3, 2026 as a short teaching at our online weekly prayer sit.

There is an inherent, underlying unity that penetrates and connects everything. Nothing is separate. No one is outside the hold of the Hand of the Holy One. Nothing is separate, not even the most horrifying things. No one is outside, not even the ones who commit the most terrible acts. No event, no act, no matter how evil, is bigger or deeper than God. Nothing and no one overcomes the power of Love.

Yet, horrible and terrifying things do happen; people do perpetrate evil acts. Recognizing that horrible and terrible things and actions are real, and that we cannot compartmentalize them by whisking them away to some other part of reality, our prayers help us to face these things, together. In communion with one another, we metabolize the terrible, dismantle the power of violence, and transform the energy of evil into the powerful force of Love. The inherent, underlying unity that penetrates and connects everything endures beyond, above, and below any and every possible terrible and horrible event or act.

Every time we share and care for one another, we honor this communion. In breathing each other’s air, we commune. In making and taking of food, we commune. In thinking and feeling together, we commune. In singing and sorrowing together, we commune. In noticing and responding to another’s needs, we commune. In listening deeply to one another, we commune. All of these acts of communion build up the life of prayer that sustains the inherent, underlying unity at the heart of all reality. We were made for and endure, through communion. In our prayers of communion, may we manifest the power of Love, unifying our efforts with the healing actions of the Holy One!
