The Prayer Thread is a collection of teachings and practical prompts to help as we learn to pray in community. This text was originally delivered on May 29, 2026 as a short teaching at our online weekly prayer sit.

Wind is invisible, yet it is a real force that impacts the world. The same is true for prayer.

Wind moves in many directions simultaneously. So does prayer.

Wind can be cool, and therefore refresh those it touches. Prayer also refreshes.

Wind can be warm, and therefore comfort those it touches. Prayer also comforts.

When wind is gentle, like a breeze, and caresses the skin, it seems to want to say something. The Holy One also speaks in prayer, though also, most often, indirectly.

When wind is strong, in a storm, it is hard to ignore. The Holy One, similarly, persists in addressing us, and prayer presses in on us, even when we do not seek it.

Wind comes and wind goes. Just like the Holy One in prayer.

Wind is everywhere, all over the world, in all the places, filling up spaces. Just like prayer.

Just as the wind catches us up in the course of our daily living, may the Spirit also catch our hearts, sending us forth with the force of Love.

Mission & Vision

Our Mission is to assist in the ongoing work of discerning God's presence, both within ourselves and in the world; provide guidance in the search for wisdom; teach all forms of contemplative prayer; offer training in the inner work of the spiritual life.

The Vision of the Episcopal House of Prayer is to be a contemplative ministry of spiritual transformation, grounded in the Christian tradition, in the practice of Benedictine hospitality, reaching out and welcoming all.
