Shadow and Light

In order for a shadow to exist, something must come between the light and the surface against which the shadow can then appear. In psychological and spiritual circles, it can be common to denigrate the shadow as something negative, bad, or even evil. But in truth, the problem is not the shadow itself. The shadow is actually a friend: it helps us to see that something has come in between us and the Light.

“I’m Silently Correcting Your Grammar”

“I’m Silently Correcting Your Grammar” is etched onto a coffee cup given me by one of my daughters. While she meant it as a humorous, clever saying for a former English teacher, it has occurred to me that she has consciously or subconsciously pointed out one of the triggers in my life that I have to fight rather often: the habit to judge others based upon their use of language.

Empty and Full, Martha and Mary

Empty/Full; Martha/Mary: these are two of the “tensions of opposites” that I see working in my life all of the time. Do you ever find yourself “in over your head?” I do, often. Projects, commitments to serve, responsibilities related to family…I jump in without thinking.
