North Woods writer Sigurd F. Olson wrote: “The conservation of waters, forests, soils, and wildlife are all involved with the conservation of the human spirit.” In this retreat, we’ll study the ways in which Christian mystics have always used landscape and seascape images to describe the Divine Source, the human soul, and the spiritual practices they’ve developed. Meister Eckhart, Thomas Merton, Hildegard of Bingen and Madame Jean Guyon are prime examples. We will do several of these practices, allowing plenty of time for personal reflection in between sessions. We’ll also talk about a third way of knowing – the poetiphatic – that completes the other two classical ways: the kataphatic (with image) and apophatic (without image). In the poetical way, we use images from nature that then explode themselves into a sense of mystery, awe, and wonder. In this workshop, you’ll learn to appreciate your home landscape in a new way.

Suggested offering: $375 (includes meals and overnight accommodations)
